OJ Networks recommends Shadow Protect from Storagecraft as the best current software for in-house backups – it allows frequent backups during the day as well as overnight, fast recovery of deleted files, and it is excellent for full computer recovery in the event of a disaster. And disasters DO happen – hard drives for instance typically fail at a rate of 10% within 3 years, and our lovely Sunny Coast climate does have a downside in terms of salt laden air and the corrosive effects on components.

We also use other solutions such as Windows Backup, Dropbox for small offices, Windows offline folders, and proprietary online backups. Either way we urge clients to have backups stored on and offsite.

In addition we are not content with just putting in a backup solution and leaving it – for our managed clients we monitor backups with failure alerts sent to us, and we perform regular test disaster recovery procedures to check that the backups are actually usable – it is not that unusual to discover that a backup drive is not readable. When it is your business you cannot afford not to do it right.
